Cat door mat

After I got my public health degree, I hit a little bit of a snag. You see, I had been so used to studying hard, spending every waking hour trying to get the best grades that I could, that I had forgotten about the rest of my life. Now I was in my late 20s, done with school, and ready to move on. For about a week I felt completely paralyzed, but then I sprung into action. I can't stay down for long, you see. I repainted my house, refinished the counters inside, and replaced my cast iron door mats with cat door mats.

The last step may seem trivial to you, but to me it was not. I have had a cast iron door mat for several years – ever since the rubber mat finally wore out. I have always had dark taste in decorations, you see, but lately – since I started my public health degree studies – I have had a change of heart. The cat door mat was a part of a strategy to live in a more healthy, more positive way. I have heard that people with cheery, upbeat looking houses were always in better health than people with a dark, brooding aesthetic. Although I can not have cats in my house because of my sister's allergies, I thought that the cat door mat would provide a pleasant decorative touch to replace the austere, Gothic script that had preceded it.

Cats, you see, have always been of great symbolic value to me. The Cat doormat had a picture of two cats, nuzzled together and looking out towards the viewer with expressions of peace and contentment. At the bottom of that cat door mat, in flowing, italic script, was the word “welcome”. All doormats say welcome, of course, but that cat door mat seemed to really mean it in a way that the cast iron one hadn't before.

The very act of purchasing it indicated a change in my attitude. Rather than getting the purely functional cast iron doormat which I knew would last me forever, I decided to get a cat door mat to suit my particular mood. To any stranger entering my house, it would have little significance, but to me it meant a lot. One day, I will actually have a cat instead of that cat door mat. One way or another, I will help my sister to get her own house. Then I will be able to have any pet I want, and live a life of true comfort.
